“Ignored”
As a photographer and student at the College of Staten Island, I journeyed to document the harsh realities of homelessness in New York City, a subject often overlooked or stigmatized. In my project, I sought to give a voice to those who often go unheard, utilizing digital photography as a potent medium to amplify their stories.
Growing up without much, I have always felt a responsibility to shed light on the struggles of those marginalized in our society. I navigate the city streets, capturing the profound and often overlooked emotions of individuals grappling with homelessness. Amid urban life, I aim to pause and reveal the poignant narratives within the shadows. Photography, for me, is a tool to bridge the gap between the privileged and the disenfranchised. I try to confront the uncomfortable truth of poverty and homelessness, challenging viewers to acknowledge the humanity that persists beneath the surface of societal neglect. Digital photography becomes more than a creative outlet; it transforms into a means of advocacy, offering a platform for the silent voices that echo through the streets.
I am not great at words, but I feel I am fluent in understanding others' emotions. Each image captured is a silent plea. These individuals, who grapple with the harsh reality of homelessness, may not have a conventional voice, but through my lens, they find a visual expression that demands acknowledgment and action.
Photographing homelessness in the wake of understanding the concept of "poverty porn" has been a challenging and introspective journey. While I recognize the aesthetic appeal of these images, I am aware that beauty lies not in the circumstances but in the resilience of the human spirit. It is a delicate balance, and I try to portray the dignity of each individual amidst the challenging circumstances they face daily.
In my own financial limitations, I may not have material wealth to offer, but through this project, I hope to contribute to a wealth of understanding, compassion, and advocacy. "Ignored" is not just a collection of photographs; it is a document, a testament to the resilience, strength, and untold stories of those who call the streets of New York City home.
